Behind the Texan warmth, George W. Bush is all wounded ego, at once awed by and infuriated by a father he cannot beat. He did not conquer Yale like Pappy. His military experience did not make him a hero. His time in the oil industry did not make him rich. Instead of winning on his own merits, Dubya has been carried along by his father, his party, the Supreme Court. Still, he believes greater things are possible. He believes in the power of redemption, in transformation, in the ability of any man to turn his life around. It just takes a little grit.

He needs to believe this. He desperately needs to believe that his presidency wasn’t a mistake, that all these failures have been worth something. He cannot just be another rich Ivy Leaguer’s son, carried along by name and money and other people’s successes. He will prove everyone wrong by showing that you don’t need a thick résumé or intellectual curiosity to win. He will outdo his father—even if he needs to burn down the country to do it.
